The shapes are soft silicone & as my little one is teething, can chew without hurting herself. The actually cube itself in made from a harder BPA free plastic with rounded edges, but the rope that holds the shapes comes from most of the corners so it many of the corners are exposed.
My little one loves it even though she is still just chewing everything.
